KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - A large fire broke out at the party headquarters of Congolese presidential challenger Jean-Pierre Bemba on Monday, less than six weeks before he faces incumbent Joseph Kabila in a runoff election.
Everyone was safely evacuated from the building, which also houses the party's television and radio stations, said Jean-Pie Ndjojdi, assistant director of one of the two television stations. He said Bemba was not in the building at the time of the fire.
The director of one of the stations was burned, but Ndjojdi said he knew of no other injuries. The television equipment was destroyed.
