U.S. to Name Special Envoy for Sudan

Monday, September 18, 2006 6:31:47 PM
By ANNE GEARAN

Sudaneses women protest outside the United Nations headquarters in Khartoum, on Sunday, Sept.17, 2006. Sudanese non-governmental organizations on Sunday protested against the deployment of U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur as activities around the globe were scheduled to call for the protection of civilians in the conflict-wracked area. Protesters adopted the Sudanese government's stance against international peacekeepers in western Sudan that President Omar al-Bashir reiterated Sunday in Havana where he was attending the nonaligned summit. (AP Photo/Abd Raouf)NEW YORK (AP) - The Bush administration plans to name a former top diplomat as a special envoy for Sudan, where three years of fighting in the Darfur region have killed more than 200,000 people.

President Bush plans to announce Tuesday that former U.S. Agency for International Development chief Andrew Natsios will be the U.S. point man in ending the fighting, a U.S. official said. The United States helped broker a truce last year in a long-running civil conflict between Sudan's southern and northern regions.

Sens. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., told reporters about the selection Monday. The White House declined to comment.
