JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - South African President Thabo Mbeki still has two and half years in office, but the battle over who will succeed him is already heating up.
Much of the fuel has been provided by fired Deputy President Jacob Zuma. A judge on Wednesday dismissed corruption charges against Zuma, giving an emotional boost to his supporters, but not dispelling the cloud over him. Prosecutors hinted they may be back with a new, stronger indictment.
The bitter struggle between Zuma and undeclared rivals within the hierarchy of the governing African National Congress is focused on personal ambition and leadership style.
