 LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) - Election officials began counting ballots Thursday after Zambians voted to decide whether President Levy Mwanawasa would stay in office for a second term despite a strong challenge from opposition candidates who lambasted his economic policies.
State television reported that turnout was heavy throughout the southern African nation after a bitter campaign focusing on whether the president had done enough to increase Zambia's foreign investment and combat poverty and corruption.
Some polling stations remained open beyond schedule because of late deliveries of voting materials and transportation delays that affected administrative staff.
