LUSAKA, Zambia (AP) - Zambia's president, whose policies have helped boost economic growth in the southern African country, consolidated his lead Sunday in the election vote count, as police used tear gas against rioters who stormed an election center to protest the results.
President Levy Mwanawasa has won 42 percent of the votes counted so far, while Democratic Alliance leader Hichilema Haikande has 28 percent and the Patriotic Front's Michael Sata has 27 percent, according to results released by the official Electoral Commission.
Votes had been counted in 120 of the country's 150 constituencies, said Electoral Commission judge Irene Mambilima. She said no further results of Thursday's vote would be immediately released because of the tense situation in the country.
