By JOSEPH J. SCHATZ

Zambia's President Levy Mwanawasa at the swearing in ceremony in Lusaka, Zambia, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006. President Levy Mwanawasa was sworn in for a second five-year term Tuesday after a bitter campaign and violent reaction to earlier indications he was winning. A main challenger cried fraud but later said he would not contest the results. Only hours after the final results were announced, Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, in scarlet robes and a white, colonial-style shoulder-length horsehair wig, heard the 58-year-old Mwanawasa's oath at an inauguration ceremony in the grounds of the Lusaka Parliament building. President Levy Mwanawasa weathered searing attacks from a splintered but relentless opposition to win another five years in office.

While his opponents charge that the election was rigged, international observers said it was largely smooth and transparent.
