 PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria (AP) - Troops launched a search-and-rescue mission Thursday for Nigerian soldiers missing after militants ambushed a military-escorted supply convoy in the oil-rich south, and the president called an emergency meeting with security chiefs.
President Olusegun Obasanjo met with the heads of the army, navy and air force in the capital, Abuja, to plot a response to days of attacks across the Niger Delta, where much of the crude in Africa's largest producer is pumped, officials said.
Global oil prices, already high, rose on the week's violence. Light, sweet crude for November delivery rose $1.19 to $60.60 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The price went as high as $60.97 during the day.
