MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - West African leaders who met at a summit last week on Ivory Coast's stalled peace process recommended the mandate of that country's president be extended another year, Liberia's presidency said in a statement.
The U.N. Security Council approved an extension of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo's mandate by a year in 2005 to allow preparations for elections by the end of October, but little has been done to prepare for the vote amid squabbling between the government and rebels. The 15-member Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, recommended Gbagbo's term be extended again.
"ECOWAS leaders agreed for an extension of the term of office of President Laurent Gbagbo by 12 months, paving the way for presidential and general elections in the Ivory Coast," Liberia's presidency said in a statement released to the media late Sunday.
