Judge, Not Jury, Sought in Murder Case

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A man accused of strangling his pregnant girlfriend last year waived his right to jury trial Thursday, hoping a judge would better understand his explanation and convict him of a lesser charge.

Stephen Poaches, 27, faces two counts of murder. He was under surveillance following the death of 24-year-old La'Toyia Figueroa death in July 2005, and was arrested a month later while trying to move the victim's decomposing body, authorities said.

Police said Poaches told them Figueroa died after an argument.
