ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Ethiopia has acknowledged that its security forces killed 193 civilians protesting election fraud last year — three times an earlier official toll — but insists that there was no excessive force.
The figure, which Ethiopia's government admitted Thursday, was first revealed to the public last week by a senior judge appointed to investigate the violence, who accused the government of trying to cover up the findings.
Judge Wolde-Michael Meshesha, a vice chairman of the inquiry board, fled Ethiopia last month and said two other team members, including the former chairman, also fled fearing for their safety.
