ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) - Ethiopia has acknowledged that its security forces killed 193 civilians protesting election fraud last year three times an earlier official toll but insists that there was no excessive force.
The figure, which Ethiopia's government admitted Thursday, was first revealed to the public last week by a senior judge appointed to investigate the violence, who accused the government of trying to cover up the findings.
Judge Wolde-Michael Meshesha, a vice chairman of the inquiry board, fled Ethiopia last month and said two other team members, including the former chairman, also fled fearing for their safety.
