UNITED NATIONS (AP) - With the conflict in Darfur spilling into neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic, the United Nations said Friday it is sending a mission to both countries to look at operations to curb the escalating violence and help protect hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Jean-Marie Guehenno outlined two possible options to the Security Council: a several hundred-strong U.N. liaison and monitoring mission with military observers and international police, and a several thousand-strong U.N. peacekeeping mission.
He said the U.N. is very concerned by the escalating violence around the Chad-Darfur border.
