Report: 14 Miners Die in Western China

Saturday, October 28, 2006 9:57:34 PM

BEIJING (AP) - An explosion Saturday inside a western China coal mine trapped and killed 14 miners and burned six others, state-run media reported.

The explosion initially generated such heat that rescuers were unable to enter the mine outside Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang province, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The rescuers managed to go into the mine through an emergency tunnel seven hours after the blast, and by that time, 14 miners were dead, Xinhua said. Six workers who had been at the mine's entrance when the explosion occurred suffered burns.
