SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - The first shipment of U.S. beef in nearly three years arrived in South Korea on Monday after the country lifted an import ban triggered by fears of mad cow disease, the Agriculture Ministry said.
Nine tons of American beef, processed at a Kansas slaughterhouse, arrived on a Monday morning flight, said Lee Sang-kil, a director-general at the ministry.
In September, South Korea approved resuming imports of U.S. beef after repeated delays in implementing an earlier decision to lift a ban imposed in December 2003 because of fears the meat might be carrying mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, a degenerative nerve disease in cattle.
