France Inspecting North Korean Ship

Thursday, November 16, 2006 5:21:58 PM
By JOHN LEICESTER

Protesters burn a North Korean flag during an anti-North Korea rally in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, demanding suspension of the Diamond Mountain tour and the Gaeseong industrial park project in protest against North Korea's nuclear test. Kim Jang-soo, the nominee to head South Korea's Defense Ministry called North Korea a "direct threat" on Thursday as regional powers mapped out a strategy to persuade the communist country to abandon its nuclear weapons program. The Korean sign read " Don't go to the Diamond Mountain." (AP Photo/ Lee Jin-man)PARIS (AP) - French customs agents were combing through a North Korean ship and its cargo of cement on Thursday, the first declared inspection under U.N. sanctions imposed following the communist nation's internationally condemned nuclear test.

France said no illegal cargo had yet been found but the "complete inspection" of the Am Nok Gang, in a port on the Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, signaled its determination to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Ministry officials said they were unaware of any other ship inspections having been carried out by France within the U.N. sanctions framework.
