NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - Mauritanians voted for a national parliament Sunday in the first election since a military junta seized control in 2005 promis

ing to restore democracy after decades of totalitarian rule in the northwest African country.

Polls opened in the early morning and lines soon stretched to hundreds of people waiting under a bright sun to cast ballots for national and municipal legislators. Women wrapped in gauzy pastel fabric stood among men in traditional embroidered robes of white and pale blue.
