BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - Criminal charges will be filed Wednesday against an American surgeon accused of contributing to the deaths of at least 13 patients in an Australian hospital, a senior prosecutor said.
An inquiry in Australia's Queensland state found Jayant Patel may have played a direct role in the deaths of the patients, who experienced an "unacceptable level of care" at Queensland's Bundaberg Base Hospital while Patel was director of surgery there from 2003-05.
Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions Leanne Clare said in a statement Tuesday that state police would issue the charges Wednesday. She said she would not detail the charges until arrest warrants were issued for Patel's extradition from the United States.
