GURUGURU, Uganda (AP) - The blue-gray rock of the Kilak hills rises above the thatched huts and the smoldering campfires of GuruGuru. In the center of the village, women sell neat stacks of tomatoes and onions in the shade of mango trees. Chickens scratch the red earth. Goats chew nonchalantly on old maize kernels.
The scene today is tranquil. But once, the area's caves were the hideouts of rebels fighting for the brutal Lord's Resistance Army.
"The LRA were so harassing to people here," says Achola Terejina, who bears two bullet scars on her left hand from rebel attacks. "Each time they came to our homes we expected to be killed or beaten."
