ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar (AP) - Madagascar's president faced 13 challengers Sunday in the first elections since voting five years ago led to a six-month power struggle that split the Indian Ocean nation between two governments.
Voting was peaceful despite problems with a peculiar electoral system.
President Marc Ravalomanana, a charismatic dairy tycoon known as the "The Milkman," has promised a five-year development plan to reduce poverty, the dominant issue in a country were 70 percent of the island's 17 million people live on less than $1 a day.
