PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (AP) - Former President Clinton was made an honorary tribal chief during a visit Sunday to promote HIV/AIDS charities in the impoverished South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea.
Prime Minister Michael Somare said the award was given for Clinton's "outstanding leadership for the good of mankind during two terms as U.S. president" and his commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS.
Papua New Guinea has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS among Pacific countries, with around 2 percent of the population estimated to be HIV-positive. The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative funds the supply of anti-retroviral drugs.
