CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Australia's main opposition party on Monday elected a new leader in a bid to end Prime Minister John Howard's 11-year winning streak.
Former diplomat Kevin Rudd, who entered the parliament in 1998, defeated incumbent Labor Party leader Kim Beazley 49-39, party official Anthony Byrne said after the ballot of Labor lawmakers.
Beazley, a former deputy prime minister who led his center-left party to election defeats in 1998 and 2001, called a ballot Friday over party members' concerns that he could not defeat Howard next year.
