SUVA, Fiji (AP) - Fiji's powerful tribal chiefs indicated Friday they would meet the armed forces leader who ousted the prime minister in a coup this week, boosting his hopes of gaining credibility and solidifying his power.
The beleaguered premier, Laisenia Qarase, urged bureaucrats to defy orders from the military regime, saying his democratically elected government was the only legal authority in the country.
However, in an interview with the Legend radio network, he also sounded resigned to the takeover, saying he was considering returning to the private sector.
