Fiji Coup Leader Gets Signs of Support

Friday, December 08, 2006 1:26:20 PM
By RAY LILLEY

Self-appointed President of Fiji, commander Frank Bainimarama makes a statement at the officers mess at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in the capitol Suva Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006. Fiji's powerful council of tribal chiefs refused to recognize the country's military regime, further isolating coup leader Bainimarama, whose newly installed prime minister said the takeover was illegal but was worth risking prison for. (AP Photo/Rick Rycroft)SUVA, Fiji (AP) - The leader of Fiji's coup received signs of domestic support from tribal chiefs and a major opposition party Friday, but the British Commonwealth suspended the Pacific island nation in the latest international repudiation of the caretaker government.

The Pacific island nation's powerful tribal chiefs indicated they would meet Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who hopes the group will recognize his government, thereby boosting his credibility and standing among the indigenous Fijian majority.

Bainimarama also received qualified support from Mahendra Chaudhry, whose opposition Labour Party has its power base among the large ethnic Indian minority. Although Chaudhry said the takeover was illegal, he offered "whatever help we can" to restore democracy.
