ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - A court ruled Friday that the vice president's suspension from Nigeria's dominant political party was unconstitutional, potentially clearing the way for him to run for president on the party's ticket in the upcoming election.
"The suspension of Vice President Atiku Abubakar by the party was not only rash but reckless," Judge Mudashiru Oniyangi said in handing down the ruling in the capital, Abuja.
The People's Democratic Party was not immediately available for comment, although a spokesman said earlier that the ruling was irrelevant because Abubakar had missed a nomination application deadline. Party leader and departing President Olusegun Obasanjo has made clear he does not want Abubakar to succeed him.
