BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) - French-backed government forces regained control of the last rebel-held town in Central African Republic on Sunday, dealing a fatal blow to a weeks-old rebellion in the country's north, a presidential spokesman said.
Cyriaque Gonda said the northern town of Ouadda-Djalle reverted to government control without fighting after rebels withdrew.
Central African Republic, an impoverished country of 3.6 million people, has been ravaged by coups and army mutinies since independence from France in 1960. Unrest in Sudan's Darfur region, which neighbors the country, has added to instability.
