CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Wildfires on the island of Tasmania have destroyed at least 22 houses Monday, a local official said.
The fires gutted houses on the fringes of the island's northeast town of St. Helens and also knocked out electricity and telephone communications, Mayor Robert Legge said.
"The information I've got at the moment is 22 or 23 houses," Legge said. "The information is very, very sketchy because the phones are not working down there because of power failure."
