MIAMI (AP) - A federal judge denied bail Friday for former Liberian President Charles Taylor's son, who was indicted last week on torture charges stemming from his time as head of a security force in his father's government.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff ruled that Charles McArthur Emmanuel, 29, was a danger to the community and a risk of fleeing the charges. Emmanuel has used several aliases, including Charles "Chuckie" Taylor Jr., and was charged as a youth in Orlando with several violent crimes.
Prosecutors say Emmanuel, as chief of the Anti-Terrorism Unit in the Taylor government, abducted and tortured a Liberian man in 2002 by pressing a hot iron into his flesh, using electric shocks and rubbing salt into the victim's wounds. Emmanuel has pleaded not guilty.
