FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The herbal supplement echinacea, often used to prevent the common cold, may also be connected to an increase in bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, according to a recently published study by a University of Arkansas professor and graduate student.
Jerald C. Foote, assistant professor of food and human nutrition, and graduate student Laura Hill studied the supplement's effect on 15 healthy adults who took echinacea for 10 days.
The researchers found that bacteria increased in the adults' gastrointestinal tracts after taking the supplement.
