BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - A former rebel leader won the election for governor of Aceh province, the electoral commission said Friday, confirming initial quick-count results earlier this month.
Irwandi Yusuf, who was in jail for treason when the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed into Aceh in 2004, won 38 percent of the vote. His closest rival, Ahmad Humam Hamid, trailed with 16 percent, provincial election chief Muhammad Jafar told reporters.
Yusuf and his newly elected deputy, Muhammad Nazar, will govern the oil- and gas-rich province on Sumatra's northern tip for five years, Muhammad Jafar said, adding that just over 2 million of 2.6 million registered voters turned out on election day.
