MUNICH, Germany (AP) - German prosecutors said Friday they are investigating industrial gas company Linde AG on suspicion it bribed the regime of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein while taking part in the U.N. oil-for-food program.
Christian Schmidt-Sommerfeld, a Munich prosecutor, confirmed a report in the weekly Focus that his office was investigating Wiesbaden-based Linde, an industrial gas producer, on suspicions that it violated foreign trade laws by bribing Iraqi officials.
Schmidt-Sommerfeld said that Linde's offices in Munich were searched in November as part of the investigation, but refused to divulge any other details.
