Guatemalan Leader Vows to Revive Reforms

As Guatemala celebrates the 10th anniversary of the peace agreements that ended the 36 year long civil war, Latin America's bloodiest in the 20th century, the country has still not solved many of the problems that originated the armed conflict.(AP Photo/Alexandre Meneghini) i GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - Guatamala's president pledged to revive constitutional reforms promised in peace deals that ended the country's civil war a decade ago Friday, saying Guatemalans must conquer the social inequalities that helped give rise to the conflict.

In the days leading up to the anniversary, Guatemalan leaders have acknowledged that while the Central American country has made some advances in education and health, it has yet to overcome extreme poverty.

U.S.-backed military and civilian governments destroyed entire villages as they stamped out leftist guerrillas in Latin America's bloodiest conflict of the 20th century. About 200,000 people — mostly Mayan Indians — died or vanished.
