GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) - Third-seeded Ana Ivanovic of Serbia beat Roberta Vinci 7-6 (5), 6-1 Monday to open the New Year at the Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships.
Australian veteran Nicole Pratt beat Russia's Elena Bovina 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-1 and will face top-seeded Martina Hingis in the second round. Hingis made her comeback here last year after a three-year break from the circuit and finished at No. 7 in the rankings in 2006 after winning two titles and reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian and French Opens.
In other matches Monday, Israel's Shahar Peer beat American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 and Italy's Tathiana Garbin upset fourth-seeded Anna Lena-Groenefeld of Germany 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 6-3.
