Sri Lankan Air Force Says Tamil Base Hit

Tuesday, January 02, 2007 12:40:00 PM
By DILIP GANGULY

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - Sri Lanka's air force said it bombed a Tamil Tiger naval base in the country's northwest on Tuesday, but a rebel spokesman said the air raid killed 14 civilians, including six children, in a fishing village. There was no way to independently verify the countering claims.

Air force spokesman Group Capt. Ajantha Silva told a news conference that the bombers targeted Padahuthurai in northwest Mannar district, where the naval wing of the separatist Tamil Tiger insurgents have a major base.

"We are very sure about the target, that it was a Sea Tiger base, in fact the area's main Sea Tiger base," Silva said. The air force also hit rebel mortar positions in eastern Batticaloa district, a hotbed of violence, he said.
