SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - His mastery on cricket grounds has made him the sport's most recognizable player. His lurid telephone messages, a doping ban and an ill-advised association with a bookmaker has brought unprecedented controversy to his sport.
Shane Warne, whose bowling greatness restored words such as "googly" to the cricket lexicon, is going out in style. In his final major match, the Australian claimed his 1,000th international wicket Wednesday in the Ashes series against England.
It also gave him an unprecedented 707 wickets in the five-day, traditional version of the game. While no one else has reached 700 test wickets, the 37-year-old Warne is second to Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan's 1,104 international wickets combining the totals for tests and less prestigious one-day matches.
