WASHINGTON (AP) - The FBI was directed by two Republican administrations to run background checks on Senate witnesses critical of William Rehnquist, first when he was named to the Supreme Court in 1971 and again when he was nominated as chief justice in 1986.
Newly released FBI documents show that the inquiries were ordered by officials in the Nixon administration and in the Reagan administration.
In addition, the documents provide details about Rehnquist's dependence on painkillers.
