SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - The Chilean navy searched Wednesday for a U.S. sailor adrift off the tip of South America, and his girlfriend said that rescue aircraft had spotted him.
Ken Barnes of Newport Beach, Calif., set off from Long Beach on Oct. 28 in a 44-foot ketch called the Privateer in hopes of sailing around the world. Cathy Chambers said he called her Tuesday on his satellite phone to say he was in trouble.
She said Wednesday evening that Barnes called a short while earlier to say that a Chilean aircraft dropped a life raft but it did not make it to his boat. She noted, however, that he already had a raft aboard.
