AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will halt tire production at its Valleyfield, Quebec, plant and trim the work force there to 200 from 1,000 by June 30, the tiremaker said Thursday.
Goodyear, where a three-month strike by members of the United Steelworkers of America ended Tuesday at U.S. and Canadian plants, had announced plans last year to cut by one-third its private label tire production.
The tires involved in last year's announcement about 10 brands sold under other names to wholesale customers are made at Valleyfield and four other locations, including a plant in Tyler, Texas, that will be closed. The status of the Tyler plant had been a key issue in the walkout.
