AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will halt tire production at its Valleyfield, Quebec, plant and trim the work force there to 200 from 1,000 by June 30, the tiremaker said Thursday.
Goodyear, where a three-month strike by members of the United Steelworkers of America ended Tuesday at U.S. and Canadian plants, had announced plans last year to cut by one-third its private label tire production.
The tires involved in last year's announcement — about 10 brands sold under other names to wholesale customers — are made at Valleyfield and four other locations, including a plant in Tyler, Texas, that will be closed. The status of the Tyler plant had been a key issue in the walkout.
