MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - The first African peacekeepers to help the government assert its authority in Somalia are expected to arrive within two weeks, the prime minister said Tuesday.
Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi told Somalia's transitional parliament there would be troops from at least five countries to help stabilize the government, which took over the capital, Mogadishu, for the first time on Dec. 28, wresting control from an Islamic movement with the help of Ethiopian forces.
Only Uganda has publicly committed to sending peacekeepers, saying it is willing to send 1,500 troops as part of a wider mission.
