UNITED NATIONS (AP) - A team of U.N. experts was headed Saturday to Chad and the Central African Republic to prepare for the possible deployment of a force to help civilians threatened by fighting along the countries' borders with Sudan's warring Darfur region.
Former Secretary-General Kofi Annan advised against sending peacekeepers to Chad or the Central African Republic because of the danger. But the Security Council has asked for a reassessment of that recommendation.
The conflict in Darfur has destabilized the border regions, aggravating rebellions in Chad and the Central African Republic.
