CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) - President Lansana Conte has agreed to name a prime minister in what could be a move toward relinquishing some of his power in the West African country, observers to negotiations between the government and unions said Wednesday.
The announcement comes after two weeks of a general strike and anti-government protests that have left dozens dead.
Ministers who met with the longtime president told a room of union negotiators that Conte had agreed to their demand to appoint a prime minister, said observers Abdoulay Sow, a union member, and Ousmane Bah, a civil society representative.
