CHANGCHUN, China (AP) - Chinese President Hu Jintao opened the Asian Winter Games on Sunday, an event drawing a record number of competitors from the cold of northern Asia to the sweltering heat of the Middle East.
More than 1,100 athletes and officials from 26 countries and regions are taking part in the competition, which runs until Feb. 4. They are competing for medals in 47 events in the last major multisport event in China before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The first medals will be awarded Monday in speedskating the women's 3,000 meters and men's 5,000.
