BEIJING (AP) - Twice in the past three years, Chinese President Hu Jintao has been greeted in Africa as the welcomed leader of a new economic and political power. But on a trip starting Tuesday, he also faces growing skepticism about China's role on the continent.
The itinerary for the eight-nation, 12-day tour reads like a guide to the reach and pitfalls of China's influence.
Hu will visit stalwart allies South Africa and Zambia where protests and criticisms about Chinese motives have arisen and new friends such as Liberia, where China is hunting for oil and supplying peacekeepers.
