NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) - The Mauritanian Red Crescent delivered a ton of emergency humanitarian aid Tuesday to hundreds of illegal immigrants stranded on a ship off the West African coast.
The vessel broke down in international waters Saturday and was rescued by a Spanish patrol ship that planned to tow it to the nearest safe port. But Mauritania said Monday it would not allow it to dock or permit its passengers ashore.
Ahmed Ould Haya, who heads the Mauritania Red Crescent, said Spanish officials had distributed some emergency rations, including food, water and blankets, and medicines, but did not have enough supplies for everyone. He said some people had not eaten for a week while others had had nothing to drink for five days.
