CHILTON, Wis. (AP) - Deputies were so sure that a man killed and burned the body of a photographer that they planted evidence and once again arrested him for a crime he didn't commit, his attorney told jurors Monday.
Steven Avery, 44, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and false imprisonment in connection with the death of Teresa Halbach, 25, in October 2005. Avery had been released from prison two years earlier after serving 18 years for a rape that DNA analysis showed another man committed.
Lawyers gave opening statements Monday in a trial that a prosecutor said could last six weeks.
