COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil (AP) - Fourth-seeded Carlos Moya and fifth-seeded Gaston Gaudio were beaten in the Brazil Open on Monday.
Brazil's Thiago Alves defeated Moya 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Italy's Potito Starace eliminated Gaudio 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the clay-court event.
Gaudio, a former French Open winner, is winless on the ATP Tour since the U.S. Open, a string of six defeats. Starace, ranked 85th, had lost three first-round matches coming into the clay-court event at Costa do Sauipe.
