MARSEILLE, France (AP) - Marcos Baghdatis, coming off a title in Croatia, defeated Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4 Tuesday in the first round of the Open 13.
Baghdatis, seeded seventh, had 12 aces and saved all three break points he faced. The Cypriot won his second career title in Zagreb just over a week ago.
Fabrice Santoro, the 1999 champion, advanced when Fernando Verdasco of Spain retired because of an injured left foot while trailing 6-3, 3-2.
