NEW YORK (AP) - Charles Gibson made it into the Nielsen winner's circle for the first time, as his surging "World News" broadcast topped NBC in the hot competition for evening-news viewers.
Gibson took over as ABC's chief news anchor in May and had tightened the race with NBC "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams in the new year, finally breaking through last week. Except for a week last summer when Gibson was absent and NBC's news was interrupted by Wimbledon coverage, it was ABC's first victory since the week Peter Jennings died in August 2005.
While the win is "extremely gratifying," the year-to-year growth in audience is just as encouraging, said Jon Banner, "World News" executive producer.
