Taiwanese Opposition Leader Indicted

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 10:45:38 PM
By PETER ENAV

Taipei High Prosecutors Office spokesman Chang Wen-cheng announces the indictment of Taiwan's opposition Nationalist Party leader Ma Ying-jeou on corruption charges during a press conference, Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, in Taipei, Taiwan. Prosecutors filed corruption charges Tuesday against Ma, a Harvard-educated lawyer many thought would be Taiwan's next president. The prosecutors said Ma had diverted 11 million New Taiwan dollars (US$333,000; euro257,000) from a Taipei city expense fund between 2002 and 2006 when he served as the city's mayor. (AP Photo)TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) - Prosecutors indicted presidential hopeful Ma Ying-jeou on corruption charges Tuesday, dealing a blow to the Harvard-educated lawyer widely considered to be a front-runner.

Ma denied the charges in a televised speech and announced that he would run for president next year. Many have high hopes he will be able to improve Taiwan's rocky relations with rival China, which has repeatedly threatened to attack.

"I want to face the people and prove my innocence," he said, adding, "Ma Ying-jeou won't be knocked down."
