UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The Security Council voted unanimously Thursday to extend the nearly 18,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo for two months to give the secretary-general time to recommend possible changes in its mandate following last year's successful elections.
The resolution adopted by the council reaffirmed its commitment "to continue to contribute to the consolidation of peace and stability" in the country.
It asked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon who visited Congo last month to report by March 15 on his consultations with the Congolese government on possible adjustments to the U.N. force's "mandate and capacities" and to submit recommendations for possible changes.
