LAS VEGAS (AP) - When David Stern emerged from a meeting with this city's martini-swilling mayor the other day, the first question that came to mind was which man still had his wallet.
Fleecing people for their money, after all, is what made this town what it is today. Long before Charles Barkley began dropping millions at the tables, there were a lot of other suckers helping build the glitzy hotels that line the Las Vegas Strip.
That being said, the NBA has done a pretty good job over the years of taking cities for their hard-earned cash, too. Right now it's trying to separate the people of Seattle from about $300 million, and the league wants $500 million or so from taxpayers in Sacramento so the Maloof family can sell more luxury boxes for Kings games.
