Zimbabwean Opposition run away from police in Highfield, Harare, Zimbabwe Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007. The Zimbabwe High Court said on Saturday President Robert Mugabe's government should let the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) hold the rally, after police insisted they had been given too little notice to find enough manpower for the event. Despite that, police armed with batons, guns and teargas and some in armoured trucks descending on the Zimbabwe Grounds in the volatile township on Sunday morning, arresting dozens of people who had begun to gather.(AP Photo/Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi)JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - Police arrested dozens of people Sunday as they used tear gas and water cannons to break up a rally where Zimbabwe's main opposition leader planned to launch a presidential campaign, a spokesman for the opposition party said.

The spokesman, Nelson Chamisa, said the police prevented opposition supporters from attending the rally where Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, was to start the campaign.

Police had tried to block the rally last week, arguing that they did not have sufficient manpower to guarantee law and order.
